In 1861, Yantai opened its gates as a treaty port. One after another, countries like Britain, France, the United States and Denmark set up their consulates here. It became a meeting point where Chinese and Western cultures intertwined, and where the piano first found its way to Yantai. For over a century, the melody of the piano has lingered in Yantai’s air, unbroken and ever-resonant. It is a sound that has woven itself into the city’s fabric — and for many, it has been a force that reshaped their destinies, one note at a time.
Today, at the foot of Yantai Hill, a piano museum houses over 400 antique pianos from across the globe. Built between the early 19th century and the mid-20th century, each of these instruments can play out a touching story.
